A Wild Excursion in Cozumel

Hey everyone! Ray here, sharing an unforgettable day in Cozumel, Mexico, with a fantastic crew: my lovely wife Lisa, our friends Arthur, Giga, Doug, Gigi, Don Juan, Nona, and Giga and Gigi's mother, Maria.

The plan was simple: rent a jeep and bar-hop across the island. But, as it turns out, the day had a different adventure in store for us.

As we were about to step into a convenience store for some essential beer supplies, we were intercepted by the most enthusiastic and persistent taxi driver, Miguel. Now, I'm not one to easily sway from a plan, but Miguel's 10-minute sales pitch was impressive. He assured us he'd be our driver all day for just $150. Given that a jeep would cost $120 plus gas and navigating an unfamiliar island, Miguel's offer started sounding pretty good.

First stop: Aquarium Beach for some snorkeling and drinks. On the way there, Miguel chatted non-stop, leaving us dizzy—not sure if it was the conversation or the all-night dancing and casino-closing festivities from the night before. Arthur began having second thoughts about Miguel, but after a few drinks, we managed to talk him back into our grand plan.

The vibe at Aquarium Beach was serene and beautiful, perfect for sunbathing and snorkeling, but a bit too calm for our lively group. So, off we went to Carlos and Charlies, a popular party spot with a DJ and free beach access. We devoured some delicious ceviche, quesadillas, and mango margaritas before heading over to San Francisco Beach to meet more friends and family.

At San Francisco Beach, we enjoyed tropical drinks at the swim-up bar. Arthur, always the character, purchased one of their famous shirts, which happened to match the waiters' uniforms perfectly. Realizing he looked just like one of the staff, he borrowed an apron, grabbed a menu, and began combing the beach in search of a sale of food or alcohol. Unfortunately, his entrepreneurial efforts fell flat as he encountered way too many cheap Americans on the beach. No luck for Arthur, but it made for some great laughs!

Next stop: the legendary Coconuts bar on the other side of the island. Now, this place is famous for its margaritas, stunning cliff-top views, and a welcoming attitude towards topless sunbathing—though, to date, I've never actually seen any topless women there.

Coconuts didn’t disappoint with its breathtaking views and strong margaritas. We soaked in the panoramic vistas of the turquoise and emerald green waters below, tempting but treacherous for swimming. After a few margaritas and some shots, it was time to head downtown for some shopping and tequila tasting.

We found ourselves at Chile Tequila, sampling some of the finest tequilas from Jalisco. They were so smooth that Doug ended up buying five bottles, complete with six complimentary shot glasses. Post-tequila tasting, we wandered through various stores, losing track of time until we realized the ship was leaving in 30 minutes!

Cue the mad dash back to the port. Miguel floored it, after we packed ourselves into his taxi. As we sprinted to the ship, security urged us to hurry, ready to debark.

Despite the initial dizziness-inducing Miguel incident, by the end of the day, we were all grateful for his company. Opting for Miguel over the jeep was a genius move.

Our day in Cozumel was a perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and just the right amount of chaos. Even with the last-minute rush, it was an amazing time, and I highly recommend trying it out. Until next time, cheers to more adventures!
