Celebrating Doug's birthday has become a tradition that none of us would dare miss. This year, our merry band of friends—Doug and his wife Gigi, my wife and I, Arthur and Giga, along with Jenny who made a delightful last-minute addition—headed to Tampa Bay Downs, a place that promises excitement with every race and did not disappoint.
The Groupon Score
The day started with a win before we even set foot on the premises, thanks to a fantastic Groupon deal. Not only did we get free admission and a racing program, but also a $5 food voucher that was just the cherry on top. The deal was sweet, but the decision to upgrade to a VIP area for an extra $20 was even sweeter, especially since $15 of that went straight to our food and drink tab. It felt like the universe was conspiring to make Doug's birthday unforgettable.
VIP Treatment
Settled into the VIP area, we were primed for an afternoon of leisure, laughter, and, of course, libations. The mixed drinks and beers flowed, striking the perfect balance between tipsy and terrifically happy. As the horses thundered down the track, we dove into an array of comfort foods—chicken nuggets and Philly cheesesteak sandwiches with fries—fueling our spirits for the betting ahead.
The Betting Game
Each race brought with it a flurry of excitement. With eight races on the agenda, we were all in, betting on each one, cheering, and sometimes commiserating over the outcomes. While our wins were mostly modest, the thrill of the gamble kept us hooked. I even managed to snag a $35 win, wearing the crown of the day's biggest win...until the last race.
Arthur’s Luck
Arthur, as per his reputation, went big on the final race. And true to form, his daring bet paid off with a whopping $350 win. My wife jokingly says he must have a village of leprechauns living in his arse, and considering his luck, I'm inclined to believe her. His win was the talk of the day, adding an extra layer of excitement to our celebration.
The Perfect Ending
As the day wound down and we settled the bill, the value of our adventure truly hit home. Thanks to our initial Groupon deal and the food vouchers for the VIP tickets, the entire experience—drinks, food, bets, and all—came in under $200 with a tip for the entire group. It was a steal for the amount of fun and memories we made.
A Tradition in the Making
What started as a way to celebrate Doug's birthday has blossomed into an annual tradition, one we all look forward to. Tampa Bay Downs has proven to be one of the best entertainment values in Tampa, offering not just races, but a chance to connect, laugh, and make memories. We've done this for three years running, and if this year was any indication, we'll be back at the starting line next year, ready for another round of drinks, bets, and birthday cheers. Here's to many more!
